For a dental clinic, a café or a hardware store, Google reviews are often the first thing a new customer reads. The good news: most happy customers will leave one if you ask at the right moment and make it easy.
1. Get your Business Profile in shape first
Reviews work best on a listing people trust. Before you ask anyone, check your Google Business Profile:
- Your business is claimed and verified.
- Hours are right, including holiday hours.
- You've picked the most accurate main category.
- You've added real photos of your storefront, team and products.
- Your menu, services or price list is up to date.
2. Make asking part of your routine
Most businesses don't get reviews because nobody asks. Pick one or two of these and do them every day:
- Ask in person at a good moment. When a customer thanks you, picks up an order or finishes an appointment, ask them directly.
- Use your review link. Your Business Profile has a share link that opens the review form. Save it on the shop phone or tablet.
- Put a QR code where people wait. On the counter, on receipts, on the table tent or in the waiting room.
- Follow up the same day. A short thank-you email or text with the link works well for clinics, salons and service businesses.
3. Avoid the mistakes that get reviews removed
Google's rules are strict, and breaking them can get reviews taken down or your profile restricted. Don't:
- Offer discounts, freebies or gifts in exchange for reviews.
- Only ask customers you think will be happy, or steer unhappy ones away.
- Write reviews for yourself, or have staff, friends or family post them.
- Buy reviews from anyone, for any reason.
4. Reply to every review
Replies show new customers that a real person is behind the business.
- Good reviews: thank them by name and mention something specific. Two lines is enough.
- Bad reviews: stay calm, apologise for the experience, and invite them to contact you directly to fix it. Never argue in public.
5. Aim for a steady flow
A few new reviews every week looks more trustworthy than fifty in one month and then nothing. Check your total and average rating once a month, and keep asking.
