Winning a new customer usually costs more than keeping one you already have. A simple loyalty program gives regulars a reason to choose you again, and it doesn't need an expensive app.
1. A punch card, digital or paper
"Buy nine, get the tenth free" still works for cafés, bakeries, car washes and barbershops. A digital card in your point-of-sale system is harder to lose and tells you who your regulars are.
2. A birthday offer
Ask for a birth month when people sign up, then send a small treat that week: a free dessert, a discount on a service, or a gift with purchase. It feels personal and gets people through the door.
3. Refer-a-friend rewards
Give both people something: "You get $10, your friend gets $10." This works especially well for clinics, salons, gyms, tutoring centres and home services, where people trust a friend's recommendation.
4. Points for every dollar spent
Better for shops with bigger or more varied baskets, like bookshops, stationery stores, grocers and boutiques. Keep the maths simple and the first reward close, so people feel progress quickly.
5. Members-only early access
Let loyal customers see new arrivals, seasonal menus or sale items a day early. It costs you nothing and makes people feel like insiders.
6. A VIP tier for your best customers
Once you know who spends the most, give them a little extra: free delivery, priority booking or an annual thank-you gift.
7. A "we miss you" offer
When someone hasn't visited in 60 or 90 days, send a friendly note and a reason to come back. This is often the highest-return message a local business can send.
Make it work
- Keep it simple enough to explain in one sentence at the counter.
- Make the first reward reachable within a few visits.
- Collect an email or mobile number, with the customer's permission, so you can stay in touch.
- Train staff to mention it every time.
- Track how many customers come back, not just how many sign up.
